Black Feminist Landscapes Reading Virtual Salon

Feb 13th Theme: Stories Untold During Genocide: Queerness, Gendered Violence During Occupations

We are continuing to center the untold stories of genocide and the current occupations for the upcoming reading salon. Queerness and gendered violence seemed like discussion areas that brought out personal experiences and connections that are worth deeper reflection. During the Jan. 9th salon, we touched on the topic of queer parenting and the barriers that we imagined many of these families faced during the current social and political climate. We are revisiting this more in the Feb. 13th salon, and the reading list reflects this focus. While I don’t have direct relationships with queer folks not only in Palestine, but also Congo, Sudan, Tigray, etc, I hope the energy of our discussions reaches those bodies that feel invisible in the mainstream conversations. Lastly, the Palestinian Feminist Collective recently protested outside of the New York Times. This protest was centered on colonial feminism, and the lack of coverage of gendered violence in Palestine. I watched the live and captured the last 5 minutes of the protest, but there are snippets on their IG page that I feel are worth a watch. We discussed this topic from the lens of lack of coverage within Palestine, the impacts of the #MeToo Movement on the discussion of sexual violence, and the shifts of the current Black Feminist Movement away from centering sexual violence. It is my hope that centering the salon on these intersections not only supports deeper learning and reflection for everyone that attends or has access to the reading list, but also furthers the tradition of black queer feminist practices of collective care, community building and awareness raising.
