Black Feminist Landscapes Virtual Reading Salon

April 16th - Disposability Culture Theme

Disposability culture was offered as our next theme. I’m sure this will continue into May. Let’s reflect on our experiences of disposability culture, while also thinking about how shame is used as a tool of control, and the politics of an apology.

Writing/Reflection Prompts

Intersectionality and Disposability How does black feminist theory intersect with the concept of disposability culture in organizing spaces and nonprofits? In what ways do you think disposability culture disproportionately affects black women and other marginalized groups within these spaces?

State Violence and Disposability Culture How can disposability culture in organizing spaces be compared to or linked with state violence? In what ways does disposability culture perpetuate systemic oppression and marginalization, particularly for black feminists and other marginalized voices?

Accountability and Transformative Justice How can we differentiate between holding individuals accountable and perpetuating disposability culture?

Radical Care and Solidarity How can practices of radical care and solidarity counteract disposability culture within organizing spaces?

Learning from Black Feminist Thought What insights can be gained from black feminist theory to challenge and reframe disposability culture within organizing spaces and nonprofits?
