Exploring Black Feminist Values in Art : Simone Leigh

Workshop Overview

For Womxn's History Month, lets center the intersections of black women artists and activism. There will be an overview of the career of artist, Simone Leigh. We will analyze 3 aspects of her art that highlight her artistic practice. Lastly, we will look how her work aligns with social movements and/or historical moments.

Goal

  1. Provide a comprehensive overview of Simone Leigh's multifaceted art and activism, highlighting her dedication to creating art that nurtures, empowers, and advocates for Black women.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discover how black feminist values are expressed in art and how they intersect with contemporary social issues

  2. Examine the art and activism of Simone Leigh to understand the role of art in social change and community engagement.

  3. Explore the connections between the artists' work, historical moments, and ongoing social movements to inform your own socially engaged art practice.

  4. Recognize how black feminist values are depicted in art and their significance in promoting healing and empowerment.

If you attended my workshop during (2023) Black August, "Art as Activism: Exploring Black Feminist Values in Art" where we looked at the work of Faith Ringgold, Simone Leigh, Dr Charlene Carruthers, and Miss Major, this is more of a deep dive into specific works of Simone Leigh.
